Excursion - Into the heart of the start-up economics

„We need to get young people to experiment more, to come up with new production channels and products. We need to get back the effort to make a change, to make a small difference.“
US economist and Nobel Prize Winner in Economics Edmund Phelps - Handelsblatt Morning Briefing 23.08.2019

In Israel, there are 6,000 start-ups per eight million inhabitants. This relation is unmatched worldwide. Entrepreneurship is highly regarded, and venture capitals are widely available - 30 times more per capita than in Europe and two and a half times more than in the US. The start-up scene of Tel Aviv has been particularly permeated by this entrepreneurial spirit and has become a hotspot of the high-tech industry. More than 300 international corporations have established themselves in the city with offices, research and development centers, including Facebook, Apple, Google, Amazon, as well as the German groups VW, BMW, Audi, Daimler, Merck, BASF, Bosch, Siemens, and Continental.

The military also plays an important role. The country‘s brightest minds are continually working on new technologies that in turn create ideas for cybersecurity, autonomous driving, life sciences or artificial intelligence projects. The start-up Mobileye, recently bought by US chipmaker Intel for 15 billion dollars, is the most known example of this.

The Support Association Macromedia Community e.V. offers ten outstandingly qualified and committed students and alumni from all locations of our university the opportunity to create this globally unique ecosystem within the framework of a 6- day trip. We will visit start-ups, incubators (e.g. SOSA Tel Aviv) and innovative companies, talk with internationally successful entrepreneurs, among others with Dov Moran, who invented the USB stick with his company M-Systems.

We get to know and experience the special history and culture of Israel during a visit to Jerusalem.

  • Highly motivated and qualified students and alumni, as well as committed founders of our university, can take part.
  • Applications with a letter of motivation, CV, and proof of achievement (including English language skills) must be submitted to by Friday, 15 November 2019.
  • The excursion is financed by sponsors and donations. A pro-rata participation by the participants is foreseen.
  • The excursion will take place in the first half of March 2020.

The excursion is supported by the General Consulate of the State of Israel Munich as well as RA Dr. Christoph Rückel, law firm Rückel & Collegen Munich and Oren Simanian (Founder and General Manager of Colosseum Sport, International Sports Tech Innovation Group, founder of StarTAU, Tel Aviv University‘s innovation center, co-founder of TAU Ventures, the university‘s venture capital arm).
